US Navy officer, wife sentenced for selling military secrets


Washington: A US Navy officer and his wife were sentenced to prison for selling military secrets to a foreign country.

According to foreign media, former US Navy engineer Jonathan Tobey worked in the Office of the Chief of Naval Operations. He was caught selling secret information about nuclear submarines to a foreign country. His wife was also involved in this work.

A West Virginia court sentenced Jonathan to 18 years in prison and his wife Diana to 21 years in prison. The judge said that Diana was leading the whole process of selling secrets.

Jonathan is an expert on submarine nuclear propulsion systems. Spying efforts began in 2020. Jonathan tried to sell an SD card containing classified information about a nuclear submarine in a peanut butter sandwich to a counter-cover officer for the equivalent of $100,000 in cryptocurrency.
